America Islas has worked in social services since 2008. She received her Master’s in Marriage and Family Child Counseling from San Francisco State University and has been a practicing clinician since 2011, working in prominently Latino and LGBTQ communities. Currently, America is workings as a clinician for the RISE Program at the Los Angeles LGBT Center. The RISE Program is designed to provide family members, caregivers and professionals with the support and education needed to nurture lifelong connections, emotionally permanent relationships and legally permanent family status for LGBT young people involved in the child welfare system in Los Angeles. America works with both youth and families in understanding underlying needs and bias preventing permanency and long lasting life connections. America is working on helping reduce discrimination and rejection in caregiver settings, while also increasing LGBTQ awareness in systems of care. America runs a support group for parents of LGBT youth in Spanish and provides resources to low income communities. |
