Bio: |
Alton Spencer has a bachelor's degree in history, as well as master's degrees in social work and educational leadership and policy from Portland State University. His graduate studies focused on systems theory and community-based practice. Alton comes to NICWA with over 12 years of experience serving at-risk and traditionally marginalized populations, including nine years of experience working with youth in educational and community settings. His approach to social work practice is grounded in strengths-based and relationship-based perspectives. In addition, Alton is passionate about applying cultural lenses and cultural awareness in his work and has served with a number of culturally specific organizations and programs, including the Center for Intercultural Organizing, Self Enhancement Inc., the Department of Multicultural Students Services at Portland State University, and the Native American Youth and Family Center. Alton moved to Portland in 1995 from Cincinnati, Ohio. He is an active writer, musician, and outdoor enthusiast. |
