Bio: For the past 25 years, Elijah C. Nealy, PhD, M.Div., LCSW has worked extensively with LGBTQ adolescents and adults in both pastoral and social service capacities. A longtime New York City resident and fulltime lecturer at Columbia University School of Social Work, he currently is assistant professor of social work at the University of Saint Joseph, West Hartford, CT. Dr. Nealy served the LGBT Community Center in New York City for 12 years, initially as Director of Adolescent and Adult Substance Use and Mental Health programs and then as Deputy Director. For the past ten years, his clinical practice has focused on transgender and gender diverse youth and their families. For several years, Dr. Nealy was the lead clinical consultant and trainer for an innovative pilot project in New York City that provided free family therapy to LGBTQ youth at risk of homelessness and/or within child welfare. A foster/adoptive parent himself, Dr. Nealy brings both personal and professional experience to work with youth in care, as well as their birth and foster/adoptive families. Widely regarded as a dynamic speaker, Dr. Nealy provides trainings in health and mental healthcare settings and clinical consultation around work with transgender and gender-diverse children, youth, and adults. In addition, Dr. Nealy brings extensive clinical, programmatic, training, and consulting experience in areas of addiction, family therapy, mental health, anti-racism work, community building models of practice, and issues of spirituality, faith, and religion. Ordained with Metropolitan Community Church, he also preaches and provides workshops for faith communities and other organizations. Dr. Nealy has presented at U.S. and international conferences, and published numerous book chapters and journal articles. Most recently, these include: Community practice with LGBT people, in Social work practice with lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people (3rd ed.) (G. Mallon, Ed.).
